What is a SWMS and when is it required in Australia?

A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) sets out the high-risk construction work being done, the hazards of each step, and the control measures that manage them. Under the WHS Regulations 2011, a SWMS must be prepared before any high-risk construction work begins, such as work with a risk of a fall of more than 2 metres, work in a trench deeper than 1.5 metres, demolition, work on or near energised electrical installations, or work involving powered mobile plant. It must be kept on site, complied with, and reviewed with workers before the task starts.

Which trades need a trade-specific SWMS?

Any trade carrying out high-risk construction work needs a SWMS for that work. The trade-specific templates here cover electrical, plumbing, working at heights, excavation, demolition, concreting, roofing and scaffolding, because each carries distinct hazards and controls. A trade-specific SWMS is faster to make site-specific than a generic form because the common hazards, controls and standards for that trade are already structured into the document.
