What is a DOT pre-trip inspection?

A DOT pre-trip inspection is a safety check required under FMCSA 49 CFR 396.13 before operating a commercial motor vehicle. The driver must verify the vehicle is in safe operating condition, review the previous DVIR and confirm any reported defects have been repaired. How often is a DOT annual vehicle inspection required?

Under FMCSA 49 CFR 396.17, every commercial motor vehicle must undergo a periodic inspection at least once every 12 months. The inspection must be performed by a qualified inspector using the criteria in Appendix G of Part 396. Vehicles that pass receive an inspection sticker valid for 12 months.

What is the difference between a DVIR and a pre-trip inspection?

A DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report) is a written report completed by the driver at the end of each day under 49 CFR 396.11, documenting the condition of the vehicle. A pre-trip inspection under 49 CFR 396.13 is the review the next driver performs before driving, checking the previous DVIR and confirming the vehicle is safe. Both are required for FMCSA compliance.
