What is a DOT pre-trip inspection?

A DOT pre-trip inspection is a safety check required under FMCSA 49 CFR 396.13 before operating a commercial motor vehicle. The driver must verify the vehicle is in safe operating condition, review the previous DVIR and confirm any reported defects have been repaired. How often is a DOT annual vehicle inspection required?

Under FMCSA 49 CFR 396.17, a commercial motor vehicle can't be used unless it has passed a periodic inspection in the previous 12 months. The inspector must be qualified under 49 CFR 396.19, and the inspection covers at least the components in Appendix A to Part 396, the minimum periodic inspection standards. The vehicle carries proof of it: a copy of the inspection report, or a sticker or decal based on that report.

What is the difference between a DVIR and a pre-trip inspection?

A DVIR (driver vehicle inspection report) is the written report a driver prepares at the end of each day's work under 49 CFR 396.11, listing any defect or deficiency found on each vehicle driven. If no defect or deficiency is found or reported, no report is needed. A pre-trip inspection under 49 CFR 396.13 happens before driving: the driver must be satisfied the vehicle is in safe operating condition, review the last DVIR where one was required, and sign it to acknowledge the repairs were certified.
