What is a cdl inspection checklist?

A CDL (Commercial Driver Licence) inspection checklist is a structured document used to perform the pre-trip vehicle inspection component of the CDL skills test as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) under 49 CFR 383. During the CDL skills test, the applicant must demonstrate the ability to perform a thorough pre-trip inspection of a commercial motor vehicle, identifying and explaining the function and condition of safety-critical components. The checklist covers the engine compartment (oil level, coolant, belts, hoses, power steering, air compressor, water pump, leaks), cab interior (gauges, controls, mirrors, seatbelt, emergency equipment, air brake check), vehicle exterior (tyres, wheels, lug nuts, suspension, brakes, lights, reflectors, coupling devices, exhaust, frame, mud flaps), and in-cab brake tests (applied pressure test, static leakage test, low air warning, spring brake pop-out). Beyond the CDL skills test, this checklist serves as a comprehensive pre-trip inspection guide for commercial motor vehicle operators who must inspect their vehicle before every trip under FMCSA 49 CFR 396.13. A systematic pre-trip inspection helps detect brake, tyre, steering and lighting defects before the vehicle enters service, reducing the risk of roadside breakdowns, out-of-service orders, and accidents. The pre-trip inspection skill is one of three components of the CDL skills test defined in 49 CFR 383.113, alongside the basic vehicle control test and the on-road driving test. Mastering the inspection sequence not only helps applicants pass the CDL exam but also builds the habits that keep drivers compliant throughout their careers.

This cdl inspection checklist covers 8 key areas:

  • Vehicle and driver details: date, driver name, CDL number, vehicle unit number, VIN, odometer, trailer number (if combination vehicle).
  • Engine compartment: oil level and condition, coolant level, power steering fluid, air compressor condition, water pump, belts (alternator, air compressor, water pump), hoses, leaks (oil, coolant, fuel, air).
  • Cab interior: gauges (oil pressure, coolant temp, voltmeter, air pressure), controls (wipers, washers, heater, defroster), mirrors (left, right, convex), seatbelt, fire extinguisher, warning triangles, spare fuses.
  • Air brake check (in-cab): build air to governor cut-out, applied pressure test (hold brake, check for drop), static leakage test (less than 3 psi per minute single, 4 psi combination), fan brake valve, low air warning device (activates below 60 psi), spring brake pop-out (between 20 and 45 psi).
  • Exterior walk-around: tyres (tread depth minimum 4/32 steer, 2/32 drive, inflation, damage), wheels and lug nuts, suspension (springs, air bags, shock absorbers), brake components (shoes, pads, drums, rotors, slack adjusters, push rod travel, air lines), lights and reflectors (headlights, turn signals, clearance, marker, tail, brake, reverse), exhaust system, frame and cross members, mud flaps.
  • Coupling devices (combination vehicles): fifth wheel, kingpin, locking jaws, release handle, air and electrical lines, slider pins.
  • Overall condition: clean cab, no loose objects, all access panels and covers secure, no fluid leaks underneath.
  • Sign-off: driver signature, date, time, pass/fail for each section, defects noted, corrective action taken.

How to use this cdl inspection checklist

  1. Begin in the engine compartment with the engine off. Check oil level, coolant level, power steering fluid, belts, hoses and the air compressor. Look for any leaks underneath.: Pull the dipstick and verify oil is between the minimum and maximum marks. Check coolant in the overflow reservoir without opening a hot radiator cap. Squeeze belts to check tension and inspect for cracks. Look under the vehicle for drips of oil, coolant or fuel.
  2. Move to the cab interior. Check all gauges, controls, mirrors and seatbelt. Verify the fire extinguisher is charged and warning triangles are present.: Confirm the oil pressure gauge, coolant temperature gauge and voltmeter read within normal range. Check that both side mirrors and the convex mirror are secure and adjusted. Verify the seatbelt latches and retracts properly. The fire extinguisher must be rated, charged and accessible.
  3. Perform the in-cab air brake tests: build air to governor cut-out, conduct the applied pressure test, static leakage test, fan brake valve test, low air warning test and spring brake pop-out test. Record all readings.: Build air to governor cut-out (typically 120 to 145 psi) and record the cut-out pressure. Apply the brake pedal firmly and hold for one minute. The drop must not exceed 3 psi (single) or 4 psi (combination). Drain air slowly and confirm the low air warning activates below 60 psi and spring brakes pop out between 20 and 45 psi.
  4. Conduct the exterior walk-around starting at the driver door and moving clockwise. Check tyres, wheels, suspension, brakes, lights, reflectors, exhaust, frame and coupling devices at each position.: At each wheel position, check tire tread depth (minimum 4/32 inch steer, 2/32 inch drive), inflation and sidewall condition. Verify all lug nuts are present and tight. Inspect suspension springs or air bags for damage. Check brake components including shoes, drums, hoses and slack adjuster travel.
  5. For combination vehicles, inspect the fifth wheel, kingpin, locking jaws, release handle, and all air and electrical line connections between the tractor and trailer.: Verify the fifth wheel plate is greased and free of cracks. Confirm the locking jaws are fully closed around the kingpin and the release handle is in the locked position. Check air line glad hand seals for cracks, confirm connections are secure, and inspect the electrical pigtail for bent or corroded pins.
  6. Return to the cab, start the engine and verify all gauges read within normal range. Test lights (headlights, turn signals, brake lights, hazards) with a walk-around or a helper.: With the engine running, confirm oil pressure stabilizes, coolant temperature rises normally and the voltmeter shows charging. Activate headlights (low and high beam), turn signals left and right, four-way hazards and brake lights. Walk around or have a helper confirm each light is working.
  7. Complete the checklist, note any defects, record corrective actions taken, and sign off. Do not operate the vehicle until all safety-critical defects are corrected.: List each defect with a description and the action taken (repaired, reported, or deferred). Sign and date the checklist to certify the inspection is complete. For CDL test purposes, be prepared to explain the function of each component you inspected.

How often should you complete this checklist?

A pre-trip inspection must be performed before every trip or driving shift under FMCSA 49 CFR 396.13. The CDL inspection checklist is also used during CDL skills testing. Drivers must complete a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) for every trip and a post-trip DVIR at the end of each day. If defects are found, they must be corrected before the vehicle is operated. Annual periodic inspections under 49 CFR 396.17 are a separate, more detailed requirement performed by a qualified inspector. Completed pre-trip inspection checklists should be retained for a minimum of three months, though many fleets retain them for 12 months or longer for audit purposes.

Frequently asked questions

What is checked during a CDL pre-trip inspection?
The CDL pre-trip inspection covers the engine compartment (oil, coolant, belts, hoses, power steering, air compressor, leaks), cab interior (gauges, controls, mirrors, seatbelt, emergency equipment), in-cab air brake tests (governor cut-out, applied pressure, static leakage, low air warning, spring brake pop-out), and exterior walk-around (tyres, wheels, suspension, brakes, lights, reflectors, exhaust, frame, coupling devices). The applicant must identify and explain each component during the CDL skills test.
What are the CDL air brake test requirements?
During the CDL skills test and daily pre-trip inspection, the driver must perform several air brake tests: build air pressure to the governor cut-out point (typically 120-145 psi), conduct an applied pressure test (hold the brake pedal and check the air pressure gauge does not drop more than 3 psi in one minute for a single vehicle or 4 psi for a combination), test the low air pressure warning device (must activate below 60 psi), and confirm the spring brakes engage (pop out) between 20 and 45 psi. All readings must be recorded on the checklist.
How often must a commercial vehicle be inspected?
Under FMCSA regulations, a pre-trip inspection must be performed before every trip or driving shift (49 CFR 396.13). A post-trip Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) must be completed at the end of each day (49 CFR 396.11). An annual periodic inspection under 49 CFR 396.17 must be performed by a qualified inspector every 12 months. States may impose additional inspection requirements. Defects identified during any inspection must be corrected before the vehicle is operated.
What tyre tread depth is required for commercial vehicles?
FMCSA minimum tyre tread depth requirements are 4/32 of an inch (approximately 3.2 mm) for steer tyres and 2/32 of an inch (approximately 1.6 mm) for all other positions (drive and trailer). Tyres must not have exposed cord, sidewall damage, or cuts deep enough to expose ply or belt material. During the CDL pre-trip inspection, the driver should check tread depth, inflation, and condition of every tyre, including the spare if accessible.
