What is a ewp 5-year enhanced periodic inspection checklist?

An EWP 5-year enhanced periodic inspection is a comprehensive assessment required under AS 2550.10 for all elevating work platforms that have reached five years from their date of manufacture. This inspection follows the Option A compliance path, which mandates enhanced periodic inspections at five-year intervals rather than waiting for a full 10-year major inspection.

The enhanced periodic inspection is significantly more thorough than a standard annual inspection. It covers structural integrity, hydraulic and electrical systems, safety devices, mechanical components and full operational testing across all EWP types, including scissor lifts, articulating boom lifts, telescopic boom lifts, trailer-mounted platforms, vehicle-mounted platforms and mast-type lifts. NDT (non-destructive testing) of critical welds is required where signs of wear, cracking or corrosion are identified during the visual inspection phase. Unlike the 10-year major inspection, it does not require a full strip-down and rebuild, but it demands a competent person with appropriate qualifications to conduct the assessment and sign off on the EWP for continued service.

Benefits of using this ewp 5-year enhanced periodic inspection checklist

  • Regulatory compliance: satisfies the AS 2550.10 Option A requirement for enhanced periodic inspection at five years from manufacture, keeping your fleet legally compliant.
  • Early defect detection: identifies structural fatigue, corrosion and weld defects before they progress to critical failures that could cause platform collapse or entrapment at height.
  • Reduced downtime risk: catching hydraulic leaks, worn pins and electrical faults at the 5-year mark prevents unplanned breakdowns during active projects.
  • WHS liability protection: documented inspections demonstrate due diligence and protect PCBUs from penalties up to $11.84M for body corporate failures.
  • Extended asset life: systematic assessment and proactive maintenance at 5 years helps EWPs reach their full 10-year service potential without premature decommissioning.
  • Universal coverage: a single checklist format covers all EWP types in your fleet, from electric scissor lifts to diesel boom lifts and trailer-mounted units.

What to include in a ewp 5-year enhanced periodic inspection checklist

This ewp 5-year enhanced periodic inspection checklist covers 8 key areas:

  • Equipment identification: make, model, serial number, fleet ID, year of manufacture, EWP type and power type.
  • Documentation review: operator manual present, maintenance logbook current, serial matches registration, service age calculation, previous inspection reports reviewed.
  • Structural inspection: chassis/frame, boom sections or scissor arms, turntable/slew bearing, platform and guardrails, pin joints measured against tolerances, NDT of critical welds as appropriate.
  • Hydraulic system: hoses, fittings, connections, cylinder rods, fluid level and condition, operating pressures, filters, pump and relief valve settings.
  • Electrical system: wiring, connectors, harnesses, battery condition, all control functions, emergency stops, horn, lights and warning devices.
  • Safety devices and interlocks: emergency descent, limit switches, tilt/level sensors, overload protection, dead-man controls, drive lockout interlocks.
  • Mechanical components: drive system, steering, outriggers/stabilisers, chains/cables/wire ropes, pivot points/bearings/bushings, tyres and wheels.
  • Operational testing: full operational cycle, platform levelling, abnormal noise/vibration check, function chart and load chart legibility, all decals and capacity labels.

How to use this ewp 5-year enhanced periodic inspection checklist

  1. Gather documentation and verify the EWP identity and service age.: Collect the operator manual, maintenance logbook, previous inspection reports and registration documents. Confirm the serial number on the machine matches all paperwork. Calculate the exact service age from the date of manufacture plate. Review outstanding corrective actions from previous inspections.
  2. Conduct a thorough structural inspection of all load-bearing components.: Visually inspect the entire structural framework including chassis, boom sections or scissor arms, platform, guardrails and outrigger structure. Measure pin joint wear against OEM tolerances. Where any signs of cracking, corrosion or fatigue are identified, mark those areas for NDT using dye penetrant or magnetic particle methods.
  3. Assess the hydraulic and electrical systems against manufacturer specifications.: Inspect all hydraulic hoses, fittings, cylinder rods and fluid condition. Test system operating pressures and relief valve settings against specifications. Check all wiring, connectors, batteries and control functions at both platform and ground level. Verify emergency stop operation at every station.
  4. Test all safety devices and interlocks systematically.: Test every safety system including emergency descent, emergency stops, limit switches for height, tilt, travel and load, overload protection, dead-man controls and drive lockout interlocks. Document activation thresholds and confirm calibration is within the manufacturer specification.
  5. Perform full operational testing and verify all markings.: Run the EWP through a complete operational cycle covering raise, lower, drive, steer and slew functions. Check the platform levelling system and listen for abnormal noise or vibration. Verify all decals, capacity labels and function charts are legible and accurate.
  6. Document findings, record defects and sign off the inspection.: Record all defects, measurements and corrective actions in the inspection report. If defects are found that affect structural integrity or safety systems, the EWP must not be returned to service until a professional engineer has assessed and cleared it. Sign off the completed inspection with qualifications and date.

How often should you complete this checklist?

Under AS 2550.10 Option A, the enhanced periodic inspection is required at 5 years from the date of manufacture, then annually until the 10-year major inspection. Between enhanced periodic inspections, standard annual inspections must continue. If an EWP passes 5 years without a completed enhanced periodic inspection, it cannot legally be operated until the inspection is performed.

In MapTrack, calendar-based triggers automatically flag EWPs approaching their 5-year anniversary, generating inspection tasks and sending notifications so no machine in your fleet misses this critical compliance milestone.
