What is a mini excavator daily pre-start checklist?
A mini excavator pre-start checklist is a daily inspection form completed before operating a compact excavator (typically under 6 tonnes) on site. MapTrack users digitise this checklist to capture pre-start inspections on mobile and automatically log them against each mini excavator asset. The inspection covers the boom and dipper stick, bucket and quick hitch, hydraulic system, tracks and undercarriage, dozer blade, engine and fluids, cab controls and safety devices including ROPS/FOPS canopy, seatbelt and emergency stops.
Mini excavators are among the most widely used items of plant on Australian residential and commercial construction sites. Despite their compact size they are classified as plant under the WHS Regulations and require documented daily pre-start inspections before use. AS 4024 (Safety of machinery) and ISO 6165 (Earth-moving machinery) provide additional guidance on safety systems and inspection requirements. A documented daily pre-start is the standard evidence of compliance for audits, insurance and incident investigations. Under the WHS Act 2011 (Section 19), the PCBU holds a primary duty of care to ensure that plant is safe and without risks to health and safety so far as is reasonably practicable. The WHS Regulations 2011 (Chapter 5, Plant and Structures) specifically require that mini excavators are inspected, maintained and tested before each use. Mini excavators present equipment-specific risks including struck-by and crush injuries in confined residential sites, rollover on sloped or soft ground, and entanglement or pinch-point hazards around the boom, quick hitch and slew mechanism.

Benefits of using this mini excavator daily pre-start checklist
- Consistency: every operator follows the same inspection steps before each shift regardless of site or machine brand
- Legal compliance: documented pre-start records demonstrate the PCBU has met their WHS duty of care for plant inspections
- Early fault detection: spotting hydraulic leaks worn bucket teeth loose pins or track tension issues before operation prevents incidents
- Operator safety: confirming ROPS/FOPS canopy seatbelt and emergency stops are functional protects the operator
- Site compliance: completed pre-start records satisfy principal contractor and site safety management plan requirements
- Reduced downtime: catching faults before they escalate into mechanical failures keeps the machine productive on site

A mini excavator pre-start inspection must be completed before each use or at the start of each shift. If the machine is shared between operators each incoming operator should complete their own inspection. This is a mandatory daily requirement on all Australian construction sites where mini excavators are used.
The WHS Act requires the PCBU to ensure plant is inspected and maintained so it remains safe for use. WHS Regulations specifically require pre-use inspections for plant that could cause injury if not properly maintained.
