Short answer

A scraper 500-hour service procedure records the intermediate service on a motor or towed scraper: all 250-hour tasks plus fuel and hydraulic filters, oil sampling, transmission checks, bowl, ejector and cutting edge wear, push block, tyres and steering. A fitter does it every 500 engine hours where the manufacturer sets that interval. Regulation 213 of the model WHS Regulations requires maintenance following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Checked against Model WHS Regulations as at 5 December 2025 (cited within as the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011) on by the MapTrack templates team. How we check templates

Key takeaways

  • The MapTrack scraper 500-hour service procedure contains 44 checks across 6 sections. Sections covered: 250-Hour Tasks (Complete First), Engine (500-Hour), Transmission, Hydraulic System (500-Hour), Bowl Ejector and Cutting Edge, Tyres and Steering.
  • The 500-hour interval comes from the manufacturer's schedule; regulation 213 requires maintenance, inspection and, if necessary, testing following it.
  • On towed scrapers, skip the engine and transmission sections and complete the hydraulic, bowl, ejector, cutting edge and structural checks.
  • The checklist records cutting edge depth at three points across the width; replace edges at the manufacturer's minimum, or sooner if cracked.
  • Take hydraulic oil samples at the interval the manufacturer sets and keep the lab results with the service record, so wear trends show early.

What is a scraper 500-hour service procedure?

A scraper 500-hour service is a scheduled preventive maintenance procedure for motor scrapers and towed scrapers performed at 500-hour intervals. It is classified as an intermediate service and includes all 250-hour service tasks plus deeper inspections of the engine, transmission, hydraulic system, bowl and ejector mechanism, cutting edge, push block, tyres and steering system. MapTrack helps earthmoving and civil construction teams manage scraper servicing with digital work orders that technicians complete on-site from any mobile device, linking every service record to the asset.

Scrapers are high-value earthmoving assets that operate under extreme load and abrasion conditions. The bowl, ejector and cutting edge endure continuous contact with abrasive material, while the engine and transmission handle heavy loads across varying terrain. Regular 500-hour servicing is critical to maintaining site productivity, preventing catastrophic drivetrain or hydraulic failures and meeting the PCBU obligations under the Australian WHS Act for plant maintenance and inspection.

From an operational standpoint, the 500-hour service is the critical checkpoint for hydraulic system health, engine cooling performance and drivetrain condition on a scraper. Hydraulic oil sampling at this interval catches contamination and wear metals before they cause pump or valve failure. In Australia, scrapers must comply with WHS Regulations 2011, Chapter 5.

How often should you complete this service procedure?

Scrapers should receive a 250-hour minor service and a 500-hour major service as standard intervals. For a scraper operating 10 hours per day six days per week a 500-hour service falls roughly every eight to nine weeks. Manufacturers may also specify a 1000-hour or 2000-hour overhaul interval for major component inspection and rebuild.

Under the Australian WHS Regulations (regulation 213) the person with management or control of plant must ensure it is maintained, inspected and, if necessary, tested by a competent person so it remains safe. Scraper service intervals should follow the manufacturer schedule and be documented in a maintenance register. Operating conditions such as abrasive soils steep grades and high ambient temperatures may require shortened service intervals. Always refer to the specific manufacturer service manual for exact interval requirements.

Frequently asked questions

The 500-hour service adds fuel filter replacement, injector inspection, transmission oil check and stall speed test, hydraulic filter replacement and oil sampling, bowl and ejector wear inspection, cutting edge measurement and replacement assessment, push block and cushion inspection, and steering system checks. It typically takes 4 to 6 hours per machine.

Yes. The procedure covers both self-propelled motor scrapers and towed (pull-type) scrapers. Engine and transmission sections apply only to motor scrapers. For towed scrapers skip those sections and focus on the hydraulic system bowl ejector cutting edge and structural components.

Measure the remaining cutting edge depth at three points across the width. Replace the cutting edge when depth reaches the manufacturer minimum specification, typically 40 to 50 percent of original depth. Also replace if the edge is cracked, chipped, or worn unevenly which indicates incorrect blade angle or uneven loading.

Yes. Download and use the scraper 500-hour service procedure for free. It downloads as a ready-to-print PDF. No MapTrack account required.

Under the WHS Act 2011, a PCBU must ensure that plant including scrapers is maintained, inspected and tested so far as is reasonably practicable to prevent risks to health and safety. The WHS Regulations Chapter 5 require documented maintenance records and that only competent persons perform servicing. Service intervals should follow the manufacturer schedule and records must be available for inspection by the regulator.
