Mineral Resources (ASX: MIN) is one of Australia’s largest mining services and resources companies, operating across multiple mine sites in remote Western Australia. The scale of their operations is enormous — thousands of assets ranging from heavy mining equipment and haul trucks to light vehicles, generators, pumps and hand tools are spread across sites that can be hundreds of kilometres apart. Managing assets at this scale, across some of the most remote terrain in the country, presents challenges that most businesses never encounter.

The core challenge was visibility. With assets dispersed across vast distances and multiple operational divisions, getting an accurate, real-time picture of what was where was extremely difficult. Different sites and divisions had developed their own tracking methods over time — some used spreadsheets, others relied on legacy systems or manual registers. There was no unified view, which made it difficult to optimise utilisation, plan maintenance across the fleet and ensure compliance obligations were being met consistently.

Compliance requirements in the mining industry are among the most stringent in any sector. Equipment must meet rigorous safety inspection schedules, operator certifications must be current, and environmental compliance documentation must be maintained and audit-ready at all times. At scale, managing these requirements without a purpose-built system creates significant risk — both operational and regulatory. The business needed a platform that could handle the volume, integrate with existing enterprise systems and deliver reliable data across unreliable network conditions in remote locations.

Mineral Resources selected MapTrack as their asset tracking and compliance platform, deploying it across multiple mine sites and operational divisions. The rollout was phased, beginning with the highest-value mobile plant and fleet assets before extending to smaller equipment, tools and safety-critical items. GPS tracking devices were fitted to heavy equipment and vehicles, providing real-time location data that feeds into MapTrack’s centralised dashboard and gives operations managers a live view of asset positions across all sites.

A key requirement for Mineral Resources was integration with their existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) and maintenance management systems. MapTrack’s API was used to build two-way data flows, ensuring that asset records, maintenance schedules and compliance data remain synchronised across platforms without manual re-entry. This integration was critical for a business of this scale — double-handling of data across disconnected systems was a major source of inefficiency and error.

The mobile app has been widely adopted by field crews working in areas with limited connectivity. MapTrack’s offline capability means that inspections, asset check-ins and maintenance records can be completed in the field and automatically synced when connectivity is restored. Automated compliance alerts ensure that inspection schedules and certification renewals are tracked and actioned before they become overdue, reducing the risk of regulatory non-compliance across the operation. The reporting and dashboards provide senior leadership with the visibility they need to make informed decisions about asset utilisation, capital expenditure and maintenance investment across the entire fleet.
