What is a loader pre-start checklist?
A loader daily pre-start checklist is a structured form used to inspect a wheel loader (front-end loader) before it is operated each day or shift. It helps operators and supervisors confirm the loader is safe and fit for use, reducing the risk of mechanical failures, accidents and non-compliance. The checklist covers everything from the cab and ROPS/FOPS to the bucket, hydraulics, tyres, brakes, steering, engine fluids, reversing camera/alarm and safety devices - catching problems such as tyre damage, hydraulic leaks, worn bucket edges or faulty brakes before they lead to costly downtime or incidents.
Benefits of using a loader pre-start checklist
- Fewer breakdowns: spot minor issues (tyre damage, low fluids, hydraulic leaks) before they become costly repairs or downtime.
- Operator safety: identify faults in ROPS/FOPS, brakes, steering, seatbelts and emergency stops before the loader is used.
- Compliance: meet WHS and regulatory requirements; demonstrate due diligence for plant operation.
- Preventive maintenance: keep loaders in good order and extend asset life.
- Consistency and accountability: a standardised approach so critical checks aren't missed across operators and sites.
- Recordkeeping: maintain a verifiable history of pre-starts for audits, insurance and investigations.

How to conduct loader pre-start inspections
- Complete loader and operator details at the top of the checklist, including the hours reading.
- Perform a walk-around inspection before entering the cab. Check for leaks, tyre damage, debris and ground conditions.
- Go through each checklist item and inspect the corresponding component. Mark Pass or Fail (and add notes if needed).
- If any item fails, note it and do not operate the loader until it is rectified or approved. Report defects per your procedures.
- Sign and date when the check is complete. Keep the form for your records or export/save as PDF.
In MapTrack, you can turn this (or your own) checklist into a digital form completed on mobile. Results and photos attach to each loader, and failed items can trigger work orders so the loader isn't available until it's cleared. Book a demo to see how.

Back to download formHow often to complete a loader pre-start
Complete a loader pre-start inspection before each use or at the start of each shift. If the loader has been relocated to a new site, has had repairs, or was used by another operator, perform a fresh check. Many construction and mining sites require a daily pre-start for all plant and equipment on site. Your company policy, site rules or contract may specify additional frequency - when in doubt, complete the checklist each time the loader is used.
Frequently asked questions
- What should a loader pre-start inspection cover?
- A loader pre-start inspection should cover a walk-around (general condition, leaks, ground conditions), cab and ROPS/FOPS (seatbelt, mirrors, wipers, windows), bucket (cutting edge, teeth, pins, quick-coupler), hydraulic system (cylinders, hoses, couplings), tyres (pressure, condition, wheel nuts), brakes (service and park brake), steering (play, response), engine and fluids (oil, coolant, hydraulic oil, fuel, air filter), reversing camera/alarm and safety devices (fire extinguisher, horn, beacon, emergency stops).
- How often should a wheel loader be inspected?
- A wheel loader should receive a pre-start inspection before each use or at the start of each shift. In addition to daily checks, manufacturers typically specify service intervals based on hours (e.g. 250, 500, 1000, 2000 hours). Your company policy, site rules or contract may require additional inspections. Always follow the most stringent requirement.
- What qualifications are needed to operate a loader?
- In Australia, front-end loaders generally require the operator to hold a Statement of Attainment for the relevant unit of competency (e.g. RIIMPO321F. Conduct wheeled front end loader operations). Requirements vary by state and territory, check your local WHS regulations and always verify operator competency before allowing use.
- Is the template free to use without MapTrack?
- Yes. You can download and use the loader pre-start checklist template for free. Open the file and use your browser's Print → Save as PDF to keep a copy. No MapTrack account required.
