What is a fleet tyre inspection checklist?
A fleet tyre inspection checklist is a structured form used to inspect and record the condition of tyres across fleet vehicles. The checklist covers tread depth, inflation pressure, sidewall condition, uneven wear patterns, valve condition and wheel nut torque. Regular tyre inspections are critical for road safety, fuel efficiency and compliance with Australian road transport regulations.
Tyres are the only point of contact between a vehicle and the road surface. Under-inflated, worn or damaged tyres increase stopping distances, reduce cornering stability and significantly increase the risk of blowouts at highway speeds. The Australian Design Rules (ADR) and state road transport legislation set minimum tread depth requirements of 1.5 mm across the full width of the tread. Section 19 of the WHS Act 2011 places a duty of care on the PCBU to ensure that plant (including vehicles) is maintained in a safe condition. A documented tyre inspection program demonstrates that the organisation is actively managing tyre-related risks across the fleet.

Benefits of using this fleet tyre inspection checklist
- Road safety: identify worn, damaged or under-inflated tyres before they cause accidents or blowouts.
- Regulatory compliance: meet Australian minimum tread depth requirements (1.5 mm) and demonstrate due diligence for chain of responsibility.
- Fuel efficiency: correctly inflated tyres reduce rolling resistance and improve fuel consumption by up to 3 percent.
- Extended tyre life: regular inspections catch uneven wear patterns early, enabling alignment or rotation before premature replacement.
- Cost reduction: proactive tyre management reduces emergency replacements and roadside assistance callouts.
- Audit evidence: completed checklists provide documented proof of tyre maintenance for insurance, audits and legal proceedings.

What to include in a fleet tyre inspection checklist
This fleet tyre inspection checklist covers 10 key areas:
- Header: date, vehicle registration, fleet number, odometer reading, inspector name.
- Tyre position diagram: front left, front right, rear left, rear right (plus inner duals and spare if applicable).
- For each tyre position: tread depth (mm) at inner, centre and outer, inflation pressure (PSI or kPa), manufacturer recommended pressure.
- Sidewall inspection: pass/fail for cuts, bulges, cracking, exposed cords.
- Valve condition: pass/fail for caps, leaks, damage.
- Wheel nut torque: checked/not checked, torque value applied.
- Wear pattern assessment: even, inner edge, outer edge, centre, cupping or feathering.
- Spare tyre: condition, pressure, tread depth.
- Actions required: tyre replacement, rotation, alignment, re-inflation, further inspection.
- Signatures: inspector sign-off and fleet manager acknowledgement.
How to use this fleet tyre inspection checklist
- Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface and ensure it is safe to inspect.: Apply the parking brake and chock the wheels if necessary. Ensure the vehicle has been stationary long enough for tyres to be at ambient temperature, as pressure readings taken on hot tyres will be artificially high.
- Measure tread depth at three points across each tyre: inner, centre and outer.: Use a calibrated tread depth gauge. Record the reading in millimetres for each point. The minimum legal tread depth in Australia is 1.5 mm. Replace any tyre below 2.0 mm as a safety margin. Uneven readings across the tread width indicate alignment or suspension issues.
- Check and record inflation pressure for each tyre against the manufacturer specification.: Use a calibrated tyre pressure gauge. Compare the reading against the recommended pressure on the vehicle placard (usually inside the driver door frame). Record both the actual and recommended pressures. Adjust pressure if needed.
- Inspect sidewalls, valves and wheel nuts for each tyre.: Look for cuts, bulges, cracking or exposed cords on the sidewalls. Check that valve caps are in place and valves are not leaking. Verify wheel nuts are torqued to specification using a calibrated torque wrench. Record findings for each position.
- Record actions required, sign off and submit the completed checklist.: Note any tyres that need replacement, rotation or alignment. Record the recommended action and urgency. Sign the checklist and submit it to the fleet manager for review and scheduling of corrective work.

Back to download formHow often should you complete this checklist?
Fleet tyre inspections should be conducted at least monthly for light vehicles and fortnightly for heavy vehicles or vehicles operating on unsealed roads. A visual tyre check should form part of every daily pre-start inspection. Full tread depth and pressure measurements should be recorded on this checklist at the scheduled interval.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the minimum legal tread depth in Australia?
- The minimum legal tread depth in Australia is 1.5 mm across the full width of the tread pattern. However, tyre performance degrades significantly below 3.0 mm, particularly in wet conditions. Best practice is to replace tyres at 2.0 mm to maintain an adequate safety margin. Fleet policies should specify a replacement threshold above the legal minimum.
- How often should fleet tyres be inspected?
- Full tyre inspections with tread depth and pressure measurements should be conducted at least monthly for light vehicles and fortnightly for heavy vehicles or those operating on rough terrain. A basic visual check of tyre condition should be part of every daily pre-start inspection. Vehicles that have driven over debris or through construction zones should be inspected immediately.
- What does uneven tyre wear indicate?
- Uneven tyre wear is a symptom of an underlying issue. Wear on both edges indicates under-inflation. Centre wear indicates over-inflation. One-sided wear suggests wheel alignment problems. Cupping or scalloping suggests worn suspension components such as shocks or struts. Feathering can indicate incorrect toe settings. Identifying the wear pattern early allows corrective action before the tyre needs premature replacement.
- Is this tyre inspection checklist free to download?
- Yes. This fleet tyre inspection checklist is completely free to download and use. Open the HTML file in any browser and print to PDF. No MapTrack account is required. If you want digital tyre inspections with photo capture and automated scheduling, MapTrack can help.
