How to use this fleet tyre inspection checklist
- Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface and ensure it is safe to inspect.: Apply the parking brake and chock the wheels if necessary. Ensure the vehicle has been stationary long enough for tyres to be at ambient temperature, as pressure readings taken on hot tyres will be artificially high.
- Measure tread depth at three points across each tyre: inner, centre and outer.: Use a calibrated tread depth gauge. Record the reading in millimetres for each point. The minimum legal tread depth in Australia is 1.5 mm. Replace any tyre below 2.0 mm as a safety margin. Uneven readings across the tread width indicate alignment or suspension issues.
- Check and record inflation pressure for each tyre against the manufacturer specification.: Use a calibrated tyre pressure gauge. Compare the reading against the recommended pressure on the vehicle placard (usually inside the driver door frame). Record both the actual and recommended pressures. Adjust pressure if needed.
- Inspect sidewalls, valves and wheel nuts for each tyre.: Look for cuts, bulges, cracking or exposed cords on the sidewalls. Check that valve caps are in place and valves are not leaking. Verify wheel nuts are torqued to specification using a calibrated torque wrench. Record findings for each position.
- Record actions required, sign off and submit the completed checklist.: Note any tyres that need replacement, rotation or alignment. Record the recommended action and urgency. Sign the checklist and submit it to the fleet manager for review and scheduling of corrective work.
