What is a bobcat daily pre-start checklist?
A bobcat pre-start checklist is a daily inspection form completed by the operator before using a bobcat skid steer or compact track loader on site. MapTrack helps operators digitise pre-start inspections on mobile and automatically log them against each machine asset with time date and GPS location. The inspection covers the cab and ROPS structure hydraulic system bucket or attachment tracks or tyres lights and horn seatbelt engine and fluids and all operator controls.\n\nSkid steer loaders and compact track loaders are classified as plant under Australian WHS Regulations and as powered industrial equipment under OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart W. Both frameworks require that plant or equipment is inspected before each use to confirm it is safe to operate. A documented daily pre-start inspection is the standard method for meeting this requirement. Bobcats operate in confined areas on construction sites landscaping projects and industrial yards where tip-overs struck-by incidents and hydraulic failures pose serious risks. The pre-start check is the operator's first line of defence against these hazards.

Benefits of using this bobcat daily pre-start checklist
- Operator safety: confirming ROPS integrity seatbelt function and emergency stops protects the operator from tip-over and entrapment incidents
- Legal compliance: documented pre-start records demonstrate the PCBU or employer has met their duty of care under WHS Regulations or OSHA requirements
- Early fault detection: identifying hydraulic leaks track tension issues worn bucket teeth or brake faults before operation prevents incidents and breakdowns
- Consistency: every operator follows the same structured inspection sequence before each shift regardless of site or machine model
- Site compliance: completed pre-start records satisfy principal contractor and site safety management requirements
- Reduced downtime: catching developing faults before they escalate into failures keeps machines productive and avoids costly emergency repairs

What to include in a bobcat daily pre-start checklist
This bobcat daily pre-start checklist covers 8 key areas:
- Walk-around: check for leaks damage loose components debris and ground conditions around the machine
- Cab and ROPS: inspect the roll-over protective structure for cracks or damage and check cab door latch seat adjustment and operator restraint bar
- Seatbelt and restraints: check seatbelt webbing latch and retractor function as the seatbelt is the primary restraint during a tip-over
- Engine and fluids: check engine oil coolant hydraulic oil and fuel levels and inspect for leaks
- Hydraulic system: check hydraulic oil level inspect hoses and fittings and look for active leaks around cylinders and couplings
- Bucket and attachment: inspect bucket cutting edge teeth and pins or check the current attachment mounting and coupler lock
- Tracks or tyres: inspect track tension condition and drive sprockets (tracked models) or tyre pressure and condition (wheeled models)
- Controls and safety devices: test drive controls auxiliary hydraulics horn lights reversing alarm and emergency stop
How to use this bobcat daily pre-start checklist
- Approach and observe: Walk around the bobcat and look for fluid leaks, damage, debris trapped in the undercarriage and any obstructions or personnel in the immediate work area before entering the cab or touching controls.
- Check engine and fluids: Open the rear access door and check engine oil on the dipstick, coolant level in the expansion tank, hydraulic oil on the sight glass and fuel level. Top up any low fluids and look for fresh leaks.
- Inspect undercarriage or tyres: For tracked models, check track tension on both sides, inspect track pads for damage and examine drive sprockets and idlers for wear. For wheeled models, check tyre pressure, tread depth and sidewall condition.
- Inspect bucket or attachment: Check the bucket cutting edge and teeth for excessive wear and inspect retaining pins. Verify the quick-attach coupler is fully locked with the safety pin engaged. If another attachment is fitted, confirm it is correctly mounted.
- Enter cab and check restraints: Inspect the ROPS structure for cracks, dents or weld damage. Sit in the seat and test the seatbelt latch and retractor with a firm tug. Confirm the operator restraint bar locks securely in the closed position.
- Test controls and safety: Start the engine and test drive controls including forward, reverse and speed selection. Operate auxiliary hydraulics, horn, headlights, reversing alarm and the emergency stop or seat-activated safety interlock system.
- Record and report: Complete the pre-start checklist marking Pass, Fail or N/A for every item. Sign and date the form. Report any defects to the supervisor immediately and do not operate if a critical defect is found.
In MapTrack, you can run digital pre-starts attached to each asset. Each submission is stored as a timestamped PDF against the asset record.

Back to download formHow often should you complete this checklist?
A bobcat pre-start inspection must be completed before each use or at the start of each shift. If the machine is shared between operators during a day each incoming operator should complete their own pre-start check. This is a non-negotiable daily requirement on construction and industrial sites.\n\nUnder Australian WHS Regulations plant must be inspected before use to confirm it is safe. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.602 earthmoving equipment must be inspected before each shift. Most principal contractors and site safety management plans mandate documented pre-start inspections for all mobile plant including skid steer loaders and compact track loaders.
Frequently asked questions
- What should a bobcat pre-start inspection cover?
- A bobcat pre-start should cover a walk-around for leaks and damage, cab and ROPS integrity, seatbelt and operator restraint bar, engine and fluid levels, hydraulic system, bucket or attachment and coupler lock, tracks or tyres, lights, horn, reversing alarm, drive controls, auxiliary hydraulics and the emergency stop.
- Is a pre-start legally required for bobcats and skid steers?
- Yes. Under Australian WHS Regulations, plant must be inspected before use to confirm it is safe to operate. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart W and 1926.602, powered industrial equipment and earthmoving equipment must be inspected before each shift. A documented daily pre-start checklist is the standard method for meeting this obligation.
- Who is responsible for completing the bobcat pre-start?
- The operator is responsible for completing the pre-start inspection before operating the machine. The PCBU, employer or principal contractor is responsible for providing the checklist, ensuring operators are trained to complete it, and acting on reported defects promptly.
- What should I do if a defect is found during the pre-start?
- If a critical defect is found, such as ROPS damage, seatbelt failure, hydraulic leak or brake fault, do not operate the machine. Tag it out of service, report the defect to your supervisor, and record it on the pre-start form. Minor defects should be reported and scheduled for repair but may not prevent operation depending on severity.
- Is this bobcat pre-start checklist free to download?
- Yes, this bobcat pre-start checklist is completely free to download as a PDF. No account or signup is required. For teams wanting to move beyond paper forms, MapTrack offers a digital version that automates scheduling, sends overdue alerts, and stores completed records in the cloud for instant retrieval during audits.
