Driver monitoring system (DMS)
A driver monitoring system (DMS) is a cabin-facing camera and software combination that watches the driver rather than the road, detecting states such as drowsiness, distraction, phone use, smoking and seatbelt non-compliance.
A driver monitoring system points inward. Using an infrared cabin-facing camera so it works at night and through sunglasses, it tracks head pose, eye state and posture to infer whether the driver is attentive. It is the counterpart to ADAS, which points outward at the road. In fleet equipment the two are usually sold together in a single dual-facing unit, and the terms are often used loosely as though they were one feature.
Why it matters
Driver-facing monitoring raises questions about privacy and how footage will be used. Before deployment, explain the purpose, discuss it with drivers and decide who may review footage and under what conditions. Test the system's settings and have the policy checked for the places where you operate.

What is the difference between DMS and ADAS?
DMS points inward at the driver and detects drowsiness, distraction and phone use. ADAS points outward at the road and detects following distance, lane departure and forward collision risk. Dual-facing fleet cameras usually run both.
Do drivers have to consent to a driver-facing camera?
Requirements vary by jurisdiction and this is not legal advice. Audio is the sharpest issue: some United States states require all-party consent to record it, which is why many fleets disable audio at the fleet level. Written notice, a published retention period and a stated rule on who may view footage are the practical minimum in any jurisdiction.
Can a driver monitoring system be turned off?
Some vendors offer a privacy mode that restricts driver-facing recording. Whether one is available, and what it actually disables, is worth confirming in writing before a rollout rather than after the first objection.

A false positive is a detection raised when the condition being tested is absent. A true negative is a negative case correctly left unflagged. The false positive rate measures errors across those actual negative cases: FPR = FP / (FP + TN). Multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage. The test must define what counts as one case, such as a labelled driving interval, and how the reference outcome was established.
AI dash cam
An AI dash cam is a connected vehicle camera with enough on-device processing to run computer-vision models against the video stream in real time. Road-facing models typically cover following distance, lane departure and forward collision risk. Driver-facing models cover distraction, phone use, drowsiness, smoking and seatbelt use. The device decides which moments are worth keeping, saves a short clip either side of the trigger, and uploads it with the matching GPS and sensor data. The word AI describes where the analysis happens, not a difference in image quality.
ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems)
ADAS is the umbrella term for systems that sense the road environment and either warn the driver or intervene. In a passenger car this includes autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. In a fleet aftermarket camera it usually means warning only: the device detects a risk such as a short following distance, a lane departure or an imminent forward collision, and alerts the driver in the cab while flagging the event for review. ADAS is the outward counterpart to a driver monitoring system, which looks inward at the driver.
Video telematics
Video telematics combines road-facing and sometimes driver-facing camera footage with the telematics data recorded at the same moment: GPS position, speed, heading, acceleration and time. Traditional telematics tells you that a harsh braking event occurred at a location and a speed. Video telematics shows you what was in front of the vehicle when it happened. Most systems record continuously to local storage and upload only short clips around a triggered event, because uploading every minute of footage over a mobile network is neither affordable nor useful.
Fleet safety camera
A fleet safety camera differs from a consumer dash cam in management rather than optics. It is centrally provisioned, connected over a mobile network, tied to a vehicle record, and configured from a platform rather than a device menu. Footage handling, retention and access are set once for the fleet. Most units are dual-facing, combining an outward ADAS view with an inward driver monitoring view, and most carry GPS so events arrive with position and speed attached.
Harsh braking
Harsh braking is one of a small family of accelerometer-derived driving events, alongside harsh acceleration and harsh cornering. A telematics device measures the rate of change in speed and raises an event when it crosses a threshold set in the platform. Thresholds are configurable, which means the same driving can produce very different event counts on two systems, and event counts are not comparable between vendors unless the thresholds are known.

Chain of responsibility (CoR) is a principle in Australia’s Heavy Vehicle National Law that makes every party who influences a transport task legally accountable for safety, not only the driver. Parties such as operators, schedulers, consignors, consignees, loaders, and packers each have a duty to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety of their transport activities. It applies to risks like fatigue, speed, mass, dimension, and load restraint.
Fatigue Management
Fatigue management is the practice of controlling the risk that tired drivers pose to road safety. For fatigue-regulated heavy vehicles in Australia, it involves complying with work and rest hour limits, keeping accurate records such as a work diary, planning realistic schedules, and recognising the signs of fatigue. It is part of the chain of responsibility, so the duty extends beyond drivers to operators and schedulers.
