Harsh braking is a deceleration event that exceeds a configured threshold, detected by the accelerometer in a telematics device or camera. It records that the vehicle slowed sharply, not whether the driver was at fault.
Harsh braking is one of a small family of accelerometer-derived driving events, alongside harsh acceleration and harsh cornering. A telematics device measures the rate of change in speed and raises an event when it crosses a threshold set in the platform. Thresholds are configurable, which means the same driving can produce very different event counts on two systems, and event counts are not comparable between vendors unless the thresholds are known.
Why it matters
Harsh braking is the clearest example of why an event needs context. A sharp stop for a pedestrian and a sharp stop caused by following too closely produce an identical accelerometer signature. Scoring a driver on raw harsh-braking counts therefore penalises correct defensive driving as readily as careless driving, which is the reason pairing the event with footage changed the category. If harsh braking is being used in a scorecard, the threshold and the review process matter more than the count.

What threshold counts as harsh braking?
It is configurable, and there is no universal standard. Because thresholds differ between platforms, harsh braking counts from two vendors cannot be compared unless you know what each one was set to.
Is harsh braking always the driver fault?
No. A correctly executed emergency stop registers identically to careless driving. That ambiguity is the main argument for reviewing footage before a coaching conversation.
Can harsh braking indicate a mechanical problem?
It can. Repeated events concentrated on one vehicle rather than one driver is worth checking against brake service history before it is treated as a behaviour issue.

An AI dash cam is a connected vehicle camera with enough on-device processing to run computer-vision models against the video stream in real time. Road-facing models typically cover following distance, lane departure and forward collision risk. Driver-facing models cover distraction, phone use, drowsiness, smoking and seatbelt use. The device decides which moments are worth keeping, saves a short clip either side of the trigger, and uploads it with the matching GPS and sensor data. Most systems record continuously to local storage and upload only short clips around a triggered event, because uploading every minute of footage over a mobile network is neither affordable nor useful.
Tailgating detection
Tailgating detection, also called following-distance monitoring, is an ADAS function. The camera identifies the vehicle ahead, estimates the distance to it, and divides by current speed to produce a headway figure in seconds. When headway drops below the configured threshold for a sustained period, the device warns the driver in the cab and flags the event. It is measured in time rather than metres because a safe gap at 30 km/h is dangerous at 100 km/h.
