The EROAD alternative for fleets that are more than trucks

EROAD is a strong telematics and AI dash cam vendor across New Zealand and Australia, and it leads on road-transport compliance: electronic Road User Charges in New Zealand, and Fuel Tax Credit and Chain of Responsibility records in Australia. Teams running plant, trailers and tools beside the trucks also need to test how those assets are inspected, maintained and costed.

MapTrack sells the RoadSight, DualSight and Panorama AI dash cams, with GPS built in and video in the MapTrack app, and runs plant, machinery, trailers, tools and vehicles on one asset record, with pre-starts, maintenance triggers and cost history attached.

Choose EROAD when road-transport compliance is the job: electronic Road User Charges in New Zealand, Fuel Tax Credit reporting and Chain of Responsibility records in Australia, with Clarity dash cams and fatigue alerts on the same in-cab unit. Choose MapTrack, which sells the RoadSight, DualSight and Panorama AI dash cams with GPS built in, when the same operation also runs excavators, generators, trailers and tools, and the camera has to sit on one asset record with their pre-starts, maintenance and costs. MapTrack is one platform for every asset a field business runs: alongside vehicles with GPS and AI dash cams, it tracks the tools, plant and trailers outside the cab with QR, barcode and Data Matrix labels, Bluetooth tags and GPS trackers, and runs their pre-starts, bookings and maintenance on the same record.

Based on EROAD’s public Australian, New Zealand and corporate pages, MapTrack product pages and public pricing and store pages as of Oct 2026. Capabilities vary by region and package; verify in a pilot.

EROAD vs MapTrack: the short answer

  • •EROAD leads on road-transport compliance. It launched the world’s first nationwide electronic Road User Charges system in New Zealand in 2009, and the ATO has confirmed its Australian Fuel Tax Credit report can be used as an official record.
  • •Its Clarity Edge AI dash cam detects collisions or near misses, tailgating, phone use, distraction, no seatbelt, smoking and fatigue, with an in-cab voice alert, and needs an Ehubo2 or CoreHub in the vehicle.
  • •EROAD also tracks equipment, with Bluetooth Where tags, battery GPS trackers and wired units for plant, and schedules services by date, kilometres or engine hours. Work orders, hire rate cards and job costing are not publicly documented.
  • •MapTrack puts AI dash cam events, GPS, pre-starts, maintenance and cost history on one asset record, across vehicles, plant, trailers and tools, with hardware and software prices published. EROAD’s Australian pages route to a demo.

What is EROAD?

EROAD is a fleet management technology company headquartered in Auckland, New Zealand, with offices in Sydney, Manila and San Diego, and it is dual-listed on the NZX and the ASX. It started in road-user charging: in 2009 it launched the world’s first nationwide electronic Road User Charges system in New Zealand. Across New Zealand, Australia and North America, 238,389 units were connected at 31 March 2026, with 26,089 at work in Australia.

Its in-cab unit, the Ehubo2, sits at the centre of a compliance-heavy product set: Fuel Tax Credit and FBT reporting, inspection, defect, servicing and speeding records for Chain of Responsibility, Clarity dash cams with AI fatigue and distraction alerts, Iridium satellite tracking for heavy vehicles out of mobile coverage, and Etrack trackers and tags for equipment. For a road fleet with real compliance work, that is a mature and coherent package.

Why teams look for an EROAD alternative

Most teams that look past EROAD are not unhappy with its compliance tools. They run more than trucks, and want the plant, trailers and tools on the same record as the vehicles.

The register extends beyond the road fleet

EROAD tracks equipment with tags and trackers. Test how excavators, generators, light towers and tools are registered, inspected and serviced as assets, not only located on a map.

Check how a due service becomes a job

EROAD schedules services by date, kilometres or engine hours and keeps a service history. Work orders are not publicly documented, so confirm how a due service is raised, assigned and closed out on the asset.

Cost and hire sit somewhere else

Hire rate cards, chargeout and cost history per asset are not publicly positioned. If you hire out plant or need repair-or-replace decisions, check where that data would live.

You cannot price it without a conversation

EROAD’s Australian pages route to "Book a demo" with no published price, so a mixed rollout cannot be costed up front.

MapTrack vs EROAD

Competitor claims come from EROAD’s own public pages, read 29 Oct 2026. Where a capability is not documented publicly it is marked unknown, never absent.

Where MapTrack is different

Where does the excavator live?

In MapTrack the excavator, the generator and the gang box each have a full asset record, with pre-starts, services, bookings and costs, beside the trucks with AI dash cams.

Tags and trackers tell you where equipment is. The record behind them is what decides whether a machine is serviced on time, booked to the right job and worth keeping. MapTrack tracks the same assets with GPS trackers, Bluetooth tags and QR labels, and keeps that record on every one.

What does the camera add to the record?

MapTrack’s AI dash cams have GPS built in, so the truck’s location, trips and estimated run hours and kilometres land on its record beside its pre-starts, servicing and costs.

Each saved event opens in MapTrack with its clip, the trip it was on, the speed and the place. On the DualSight, the Pro plan adds live road alerts including tailgating and forward collision warnings, and the Advanced plan adds driver monitoring. Footage is visible to account owners only.

Can you see what the asset actually costs?

Rate cards, chargeout and cost history per asset and per site, so utilisation and cost sit beside location rather than in a finance spreadsheet.

Telematics tells you where a machine is. It does not usually tell you what it cost you this month, what it earned on a site, or whether it is worth keeping. MapTrack carries that on the asset record (rate cards and finance are a Pro and Enterprise add-on).

What about sites out of mobile coverage?

The DualSight can send its data and video over a vehicle-mounted Starlink’s Wi-Fi instead of mobile data, and the G150 tracker reports over Iridium satellite.

On Starlink the DualSight uses Starlink only: there is no automatic fallback to its SIM. If Starlink is off or unavailable it keeps recording to its card, subject to storage and power, and uploads and video requests wait until the connection is back. We set it up with you before it goes in the vehicle.

Where EROAD wins

Written to be useful rather than flattering to us. If these are the things you are buying, buy them.

Road-transport compliance, done properly

Electronic Road User Charges in New Zealand since 2009, a Fuel Tax Credit report the ATO accepts as an official record, an FBT logbook and Chain of Responsibility records in Australia. MapTrack does not do road-user charging or fuel tax reporting.

Fatigue alerts in the cab

Clarity Edge fatigue AI watches for yawning, frequent blinking and eyes closed for more than 1.5 seconds, with a voice alert to the driver and a notification to a manager at the same time.

Work diaries for heavy vehicles

An NZTA-approved electronic logbook in New Zealand, and in Australia Logmaster’s Electronic Work Diary, approved by NHVR, as an add-on to EROAD’s Geotab heavy vehicle solution.

It does track equipment

Where tags, Oyster3 and G70 trackers and Inspect on a phone cover more than the trucks. If your plant and tools need location only, the gap may be smaller than it first appears.

When to choose each

Choose MapTrack if you…

  • Your fleet is mixed: plant, machinery, trailers and tools alongside vehicles.
  • Pre-starts, maintenance and cost need to sit on the same record as location and dash cam events.
  • You want work orders raised automatically from meter readings and run-time hours, with tiered service plans.
  • You want published hardware pricing rather than a quote.
  • You need equipment bookings (Requests) with approvals, conflict checks and scan-to-check-out.
  • You hire out equipment and need rate cards with daily, weekly and monthly rates (a Pro and Enterprise add-on).
  • You want a cost ledger, budget vs actual and repair-or-replace for every asset (a Pro and Enterprise add-on).
  • Some vehicles work beyond mobile coverage and carry a Starlink, so the DualSight can send its video over Starlink Wi-Fi.

Consider EROAD if you…

  • •Your programme is road-transport compliance: electronic RUC in New Zealand, or Fuel Tax Credits, FBT and Chain of Responsibility records in Australia.
  • •You want fatigue alerts with an in-cab voice alert on heavy vehicles, alongside the in-cab unit that runs your compliance.
  • •Your assets are overwhelmingly road vehicles rather than mixed plant, trailers and tools.

Pricing and total cost

MapTrack

Per-asset software pricing with unlimited users, published on the pricing page. Hardware is listed with its price in the public store, including the AI Fleet Dash Cam with GPS and the full GPS tracker range.

You can price a mixed rollout before speaking to anyone, which matters when your rollout includes vehicles, plant, trailers and tools.

EROAD

EROAD’s Australian pages publish no price and route buyers to "Book a demo". Its terms describe renting the hardware with the services as a monthly bundle, or buying the hardware and paying a monthly fee. Itemise the in-cab unit, cameras, trackers and tags, any compliance or fatigue add-ons, contract term and installation before signing.

Always compare hardware ownership, contract term, minimums, installation, SIM and data, any compliance add-ons, and footage retention before deciding.

Moving from EROAD, or running both

You can keep EROAD on the trucks for compliance and run MapTrack across the whole register. EROAD is on MapTrack’s integrations page as a supported telematics data source, so the two can run side by side.

1

Export the asset register first

Pull your asset list, categories, serial numbers and current assignments. This is the part that carries forward, whichever telematics you keep on the trucks.

2

Decide what stays on EROAD

If RUC, Fuel Tax Credits or work diaries run on EROAD, keep them there. Move the plant, trailers and tools, and the pre-starts and services for every asset, into MapTrack.

3

Run both on one site

Pick a site with a truck, an excavator, a trailer and a generator. Keep the incumbent running. Compare what each system knows about all four at the end of a month.

4

Move the workflows, then the hardware

Pre-starts, maintenance schedules and custody move first because they are the daily habit. Cameras and trackers follow at contract renewal, which avoids paying twice.

What to verify in a pilot

Both of these are questions to ask, not claims to trust. Run them against your own asset list.

  • ✓MapTrack: Load a real asset list covering a truck, an excavator, a trailer and a generator. Run a pre-start on each, let a run-hours service fall due, and check the cost history. If you run Starlink, test the DualSight on it before rollout. The test is whether all four assets have a complete record at the end.
  • ✓EROAD: Ask which asset classes the tags and trackers support and what run hours they report, how a due service becomes a work order, and where hire rates and asset costs would live. Ask which Clarity camera and AI options your quote includes, and whether each needs an Ehubo2 or CoreHub in the vehicle.

Other alternatives worth considering

If road-fleet telematics is the whole programme, these are the comparisons that matter more than ours.

Teletrac Navman

Established fleet telematics with dedicated Australian and New Zealand sites, AI video and heavy-vehicle compliance tools.

Samsara

Large connected-operations platform with strong fleet, trailer and camera hardware. Strongest where the fleet is vehicle-heavy.

Lytx

Long-established video telematics with a mature driver coaching programme.

Geotab

Deep telematics ecosystem with a wide marketplace. Camera options exist alongside a large third-party integration set.

Methodology and sources

Frequently asked questions: EROAD vs MapTrack

It depends what EROAD is doing for you. If it is road-user charging, fuel tax or work diaries, look at other road-compliance telematics such as Teletrac Navman. If the real problem is that the trucks are only part of the fleet, MapTrack is the alternative: it sells the RoadSight, DualSight and Panorama AI dash cams, with GPS built in and live view and event clips in the MapTrack app, and runs the plant, trailers and tools alongside the vehicles on one asset record.

For a road fleet buying electronic RUC, Fuel Tax Credit reporting or work diaries, no, and we would say so. For a mixed fleet, MapTrack covers the whole asset register, including AI dash cam events on the vehicles, which is a different and usually larger job.

Yes. Keep EROAD on the trucks for compliance and run MapTrack across the full asset register for pre-starts, maintenance, custody and cost. EROAD is listed as a supported telematics data source on MapTrack’s integrations page, set up by our team. Start with one site that has both vehicles and plant.

Yes, in part. EROAD publishes Bluetooth Where tags for tools, Oyster3 battery GPS trackers for trailers and bins, and wired G70 units that report run hours for plant and generators, and Inspect covers checks on any vehicle or asset from a phone. Work orders, hire rate cards and asset costing are not publicly documented, so test them in a pilot.

The MapTrack DualSight AI dash cam can be set up to send its data and video over a vehicle-mounted Starlink’s Wi-Fi instead of mobile data. It then uses Starlink only, with no automatic fallback to its SIM: if Starlink is off or unavailable, it keeps recording to its card, subject to storage and power, and uploads and video requests wait until the connection is back. For trackers, the G150 reports over Iridium satellite where there is no mobile coverage.

On the DualSight, the Pro plan adds live road alerts for tailgating, forward collision warnings, lane departure and harsh braking, and the Advanced plan adds driver monitoring for fatigue, distraction, phone use, seatbelt and smoking. Each saved event opens in MapTrack with its clip, the trip it was on, the speed and the place, and footage is visible to account owners only.

MapTrack’s AI dash cams have GPS built in, so a truck with one runs without a separate tracker: the camera’s location and trips land on the truck’s record in MapTrack, beside its pre-starts, servicing and costs. Estimated run hours and kilometres from the camera feed the truck’s meters, so its servicing follows real use.

Yes. MapTrack is one platform for every asset a field business runs: tools, plant, trailers and vehicles, tracked with QR, barcode and Data Matrix labels, Bluetooth tags, GPS trackers and AI dash cams, and inspected, booked and maintained on one record, from any phone. It is priced per asset with unlimited users and holds Capterra’s Best Ease of Use award for 2026.

Yes. MapTrack rate cards set daily, weekly and monthly hire rates by asset category or individual asset, for dry, wet or standby hire, and record the hire cost when equipment comes back. Finance dashboards keep a cost ledger for every asset, location and person, with budget vs actual, depreciation and repair-or-replace guidance. Divisions give each division its own assets and team access, while account owners see across every division. Rate cards, finance and divisions are an add-on on the Pro and Enterprise plans.
