What is a trailer pre-trip checklist?
A trailer pre-trip inspection checklist is a structured form completed by a driver or operator before towing a trailer on public roads or worksites. It covers the coupling and hitch assembly, braking system, tyres and wheels, lighting and electrical connections, load restraint, structural integrity and safety equipment. The checklist ensures the trailer is roadworthy, the load is secure and the combination vehicle can be operated safely. MapTrack digitises trailer pre-trip inspections so every check is recorded against the trailer asset record with timestamped photos, GPS location and automatic defect escalation to maintenance teams.
Trailer pre-trip inspections are a legal obligation under Chain of Responsibility (CoR) legislation in Australia and FMCSA regulations in the United States. The NHVR Heavy Vehicle National Law requires every party in the supply chain to take reasonable steps to ensure a heavy vehicle and its trailer are safe before use. A documented pre-trip inspection demonstrates that the driver and the organisation fulfilled their duty of care. Failing to complete a pre-trip inspection exposes the driver, operator and consignor to significant penalties under CoR, including personal liability for directors and managers.

Benefits of using this trailer pre-trip checklist
- Legal compliance: a completed pre-trip record demonstrates compliance with NHVR Chain of Responsibility obligations and FMCSA 49 CFR 396.13 driver inspection requirements
- Coupling safety: systematic checks of the hitch, safety chains, breakaway system and electrical connector prevent separation incidents on the road
- Brake assurance: verifying brake function, air line connections and breakaway brake activation before departure reduces the risk of runaway trailers
- Tyre condition: checking tyre pressure, tread depth, sidewall condition and wheel nut torque prevents blowouts and rim failures at highway speed
- Load security: confirming load restraint meets the Load Restraint Guide requirements prevents load shift, spillage and serious road incidents
- Defect escalation: digital inspections in MapTrack automatically raise work orders for failed items so maintenance teams can respond before the trailer is dispatched

What to include in a trailer pre-trip checklist
This trailer pre-trip checklist covers 8 key areas:
- Coupling and hitch: verify coupling is fully engaged and locked, safety chains are crossed under the tongue, breakaway cable is connected and the electrical plug is secure with no exposed wires
- Braking system: test trailer brakes independently, check air or hydraulic brake line connections for leaks, verify breakaway brake activates when the lanyard is pulled and confirm the handbrake holds on a grade
- Tyres and wheels: inspect tread depth across the full width, check for cuts bulges or sidewall damage, confirm tyre pressures meet the placard specification and verify wheel nuts are torqued to the manufacturer setting
- Lights and electrical: confirm all tail lights, brake lights, indicators and clearance markers are functioning, check the electrical connector pins for corrosion and verify the number plate light is operational
- Structural integrity: inspect the chassis, drawbar, cross-members and welds for cracks, corrosion or distortion, check mudguards, splash guards and any fitted toolboxes for security
- Load restraint: verify the load is restrained in accordance with the Load Restraint Guide, check tie-down straps, chains or gates for condition and correct tension, confirm the load does not exceed the aggregate trailer mass (ATM)
- Safety equipment: confirm the trailer has reflective markings or tape in place, a wheel chock is available, and a fire extinguisher is accessible where required by site or regulatory rules
- Registration and compliance: verify the trailer registration label is current, the compliance plate is legible and any required annual inspection or roadworthy certificate is valid
How to use this trailer pre-trip checklist
- Walk-around inspection: start at the coupling and walk clockwise around the trailer, visually checking the hitch lock, safety chains, breakaway cable, chassis, tyres, lights, load restraint and structural condition before connecting power
- Connect and test electrics: plug in the electrical connector and have a second person confirm that tail lights, brake lights, indicators and clearance markers all illuminate correctly at the rear of the trailer
- Test brakes: apply the trailer brakes independently using the in-cab controller or breakaway lanyard, confirm the wheels lock, then release and check for free rotation without dragging
- Inspect tyres and wheels: check each tyre for tread depth, sidewall damage, correct pressure and any embedded objects, then verify wheel nuts are tight by applying a torque wrench or using a check pattern
- Verify load restraint: confirm the load is within the rated capacity, check that all tie-downs are tensioned correctly and that the load cannot shift forward, rearward or laterally during transport
- Record and sign off: complete the checklist in MapTrack or on the printed form, note any defects found, attach photos of damage or concern items, sign and date the inspection before departing

Back to download formHow often should you complete this checklist?
A trailer pre-trip inspection must be completed before every trip or at the start of each shift if the trailer remains coupled overnight. Under NHVR Chain of Responsibility legislation, every party in the chain must take reasonable steps to ensure a heavy vehicle and its combination are safe. FMCSA 49 CFR 396.13 requires drivers in the United States to complete a pre-trip inspection and review the previous driver vehicle inspection report before operating a combination vehicle.
For trailers used on construction sites or mine sites, a pre-start inspection is typically required at the beginning of each shift regardless of whether the trailer travels on public roads. The Heavy Vehicle National Law also requires periodic roadworthy inspections at intervals set by each state or territory jurisdiction. Regular pre-trip inspections complement these periodic checks by catching defects between formal inspections.
Frequently asked questions
- What must a trailer pre-trip inspection cover?
- A trailer pre-trip inspection must cover the coupling and hitch (lock, safety chains, breakaway cable), braking system (trailer brakes, air or hydraulic lines, breakaway brake), tyres and wheels (tread, pressure, wheel nuts), lights and electrical (tail, brake, indicators, clearance markers, number plate), structural integrity (chassis, drawbar, welds), load restraint (tie-downs, load within ATM), safety equipment (reflectors, wheel chock) and registration compliance.
- Is a trailer pre-trip inspection legally required in Australia?
- Yes. Under the Heavy Vehicle National Law and NHVR Chain of Responsibility provisions, drivers and operators must ensure a heavy vehicle and its trailer are safe before use. While light trailers under 4.5 tonnes GVM are not directly covered by the HVNL, state road rules and the WHS Act still require the person in control of plant to ensure it is safe. Completing a documented pre-trip inspection is the standard way to demonstrate compliance.
- How long does a trailer pre-trip inspection take?
- A thorough trailer pre-trip inspection typically takes 10 to 15 minutes for a single-axle trailer and 15 to 25 minutes for a multi-axle or road-train combination. The time invested is minimal compared to the legal, safety and financial consequences of a defect-related incident on the road.
