How to complete a trailer annual roadworthy inspection
- Prepare the trailer: park on a flat level surface chock the wheels and disconnect from the tow vehicle to allow full coupling inspection
- Inspect chassis and frame: walk around the trailer and inspect all structural members for cracks corrosion or deformation paying particular attention to suspension mount points and cross members
- Check coupling mechanism: inspect the coupling for wear and correct latch operation then measure coupling wear against manufacturer limits
- Test braking system: reconnect to the tow vehicle and test brake operation by driving at low speed and applying trailer brakes then check for even application and inspect shoes pads and drums or discs
- Test breakaway system: disconnect the breakaway cable and verify that the trailer brakes apply automatically and the breakaway battery holds charge

How often should a trailer roadworthy inspection be performed?
