What is a trailer annual roadworthy checklist?

A trailer annual roadworthy checklist is a structured inspection form used to assess whether a trailer meets registration and roadworthy requirements for continued on-road use. MapTrack helps fleet and maintenance teams digitise roadworthy inspections so every result is stored against the trailer asset record with photos and sign-off. This checklist covers the chassis and frame coupling mechanism brakes (electric or hydraulic where fitted) lights and reflectors tyres and wheels suspension drawbar safety chains and load restraint points.

This checklist is distinct from a general trailer service procedure. It focuses specifically on the compliance items that Australian state and territory transport authorities assess during registration renewal or roadworthy inspections. Each state has its own vehicle standards and inspection requirements but the core items are consistent across jurisdictions. A documented annual roadworthy check demonstrates that the PCBU has met their WHS obligations for plant used on public roads.

Benefits

  • Registration compliance: completing the checklist before registration renewal identifies defects that would cause an inspection failure
  • WHS compliance: documented roadworthy records demonstrate the PCBU has met their duty of care for plant operated on public roads
  • Reduced defect notices: catching lights brakes and tyre issues before the trailer is on the road prevents roadside defect notices and grounding
  • Consistent inspections: a structured checklist ensures every trailer receives the same thorough assessment regardless of who performs the check
  • Fleet visibility: digital records give fleet managers a clear view of which trailers are roadworthy and which need attention before registration
  • Safety: verifying brakes coupling safety chains and load restraint prevents trailer separation and load shift incidents on public roads

Benefits of digitising forms in MapTrack

What to include in a trailer annual roadworthy checklist

  • Chassis and frame: inspect for cracks corrosion deformation and weld integrity particularly at stress points and suspension mounts
  • Coupling mechanism: inspect the tow coupling ball coupling or pintle hook for wear cracks and correct latch or locking operation
  • Brakes: test electric or hydraulic brakes for correct operation and even application and inspect brake shoes pads drums or discs for wear
  • Breakaway system: test the breakaway battery switch cable and brake application (trailers over 2000 kg ATM where fitted)
  • Lights and reflectors: test all lights including tail stop indicators clearance and number plate light and check reflector condition and placement
  • Tyres and wheels: check tread depth (minimum 1.5 mm) tyre condition inflation pressure wheel nut torque and rim condition
  • Suspension: inspect leaf springs airbags or torsion bars for cracks sagging or damage and check U-bolts and shackle pins
  • Drawbar and A-frame: inspect for cracks bending and corrosion and check jockey wheel operation
  • Safety chains: inspect chain condition rating and attachment points and verify chains are correctly crossed under the drawbar
  • Load restraint: inspect headboard tie-down points gates latches and deck condition for safe load securing

How to complete a trailer annual roadworthy inspection

  1. Prepare the trailer: park on a flat level surface chock the wheels and disconnect from the tow vehicle to allow full coupling inspection
  2. Inspect chassis and frame: walk around the trailer and inspect all structural members for cracks corrosion or deformation paying particular attention to suspension mount points and cross members
  3. Check coupling mechanism: inspect the coupling for wear and correct latch operation then measure coupling wear against manufacturer limits
  4. Test braking system: reconnect to the tow vehicle and test brake operation by driving at low speed and applying trailer brakes then check for even application and inspect shoes pads and drums or discs
  5. Test breakaway system: disconnect the breakaway cable and verify that the trailer brakes apply automatically and the breakaway battery holds charge
  6. Check all lights: turn on all lighting circuits and walk around the trailer to verify every light functions including tail stop indicators clearance and number plate light
  7. Inspect tyres and wheels: measure tread depth at the shallowest point on each tyre check for sidewall damage cracking or bulges then verify inflation pressure and wheel nut torque
  8. Inspect suspension and drawbar: check springs or torsion bars for cracks and sagging and inspect the drawbar and A-frame for structural integrity
  9. Check safety chains and load restraint: verify chain rating condition and attachment then inspect all tie-down points gates and latches
  10. Document and close out: record all findings and measurements note any defects requiring rectification sign off and attach the next inspection due date

How often should a trailer roadworthy inspection be performed?

Trailer roadworthy inspections should be completed annually before registration renewal. In addition to the annual roadworthy check trailers should receive a pre-trip inspection each time they are coupled for use and a separate annual mechanical service covering bearings brakes and structural maintenance.

Registration inspection requirements vary by state and territory in Australia. In Queensland a Certificate of Inspection (COI) is required for trailers over 750 kg ATM. In New South Wales trailers over 4.5 tonnes require annual inspections. In Victoria light trailers are exempt from periodic roadworthy but must pass inspection on transfer of registration. Regardless of state requirements an annual roadworthy check is good practice for any trailer used on public roads and provides documented evidence of compliance under the WHS Act.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a trailer roadworthy and a trailer service?
A roadworthy checklist focuses on registration compliance items such as lights, brakes, tyres, coupling, safety chains, and structural integrity. A trailer service procedure covers mechanical maintenance including bearing repacking, brake adjustment, suspension component replacement, and chassis protection. Both should be performed annually but they serve different purposes.
Which states require annual trailer inspections for registration?
Requirements vary. Queensland requires a Certificate of Inspection for trailers over 750 kg ATM. New South Wales requires annual inspections for trailers over 4.5 tonnes. Victoria requires roadworthy on transfer of registration but not annually for light trailers. Check your state or territory transport authority for current requirements.
What is the minimum tyre tread depth for a trailer in Australia?
The minimum legal tread depth for trailer tyres in Australia is 1.5 mm across the full width of the tread contact area. Tyres must also be free from cuts, bulges, exposed cords and sidewall damage. Mismatched tyre sizes on the same axle are not permitted.
