What is a sweeper pre-start checklist?

A sweeper pre-start checklist is a structured daily inspection form used to verify that a road or site sweeper is safe to operate before each shift. MapTrack users digitise sweeper pre-start checklists to capture inspections on mobile and automatically log them against each asset. It covers all safety-critical components including the engine, water spray system, main broom and side brooms, suction fan, hopper, hydraulic system, cab controls, lights and safety devices.

Pre-start inspections are required under Australian WHS legislation for all powered mobile plant. A documented pre-start ensures operators identify faults before they lead to breakdowns, environmental spills or safety incidents on roads and construction sites. AS 4024 (Safety of machinery) provides additional guidance on guarding, emergency stops and safety systems for sweepers. Sweepers operating on public roads must also comply with vehicle registration and roadworthiness requirements. A documented daily pre-start is the standard evidence of compliance for council, insurer and regulator audits.

Benefits of using this sweeper pre-start checklist

  • Safety: identify worn brooms water leaks or fan faults before they cause a breakdown or incident on a public road
  • Compliance: documented pre-start inspections satisfy WHS obligations for powered mobile plant
  • Reduced downtime: catching hydraulic leaks low water levels or blocked nozzles early prevents costly mid-shift stoppages
  • Accountability: signed checklists create a clear record of who inspected the sweeper and when
  • Consistency: every operator follows the same inspection process regardless of experience level
  • Audit readiness: a complete inspection history supports insurer council and regulator audits

Benefits of digitising forms in MapTrack

When you digitise sweeper checklists in MapTrack, you get:

  • Field users can easily scan a QR code to complete a form on mobile. Unlimited users.
  • Automatically get alerts when faults are identified.
  • Link every form digitally as a PDF to the relevant asset, location or person.

  • Ability to share forms digitally.
  • Build conditional logic (show or hide questions based on answers).
  • Take pictures or attach photos. Not possible with a paper-based form.
  • Electronic signatures.
  • Edit forms later without reprinting.
  • Restrict permissions (who can view, complete or approve).
  • Build forms with AI (describe what you need and MapTrack suggests the form).
  • Auto-schedule pre-start forms so operators are prompted before every shift.
  • Flag overdue pre-starts on the dashboard so nothing leaves the yard unchecked.
  • Link each pre-start to the asset record for a complete inspection history.

What to include in a sweeper pre-start checklist

This sweeper pre-start checklist covers 8 key areas:

  • Engine oil level and condition: check dipstick for correct level and discolouration
  • Coolant and fuel levels: verify both are adequate for the planned shift
  • Water tank level: confirm sufficient water for dust suppression during the sweep
  • Broom condition: inspect main broom and side brooms for excessive wear missing bristles or damage
  • Suction fan: check fan operation listen for unusual noise and inspect for debris buildup
  • Hydraulic system: check oil level inspect hoses for leaks and test broom lift and lower functions
  • Cab and controls: confirm mirrors are clean seatbelt works all controls respond and handbrake holds
  • Lights and safety devices: test headlights tail lights indicators reversing alarm beacon and horn

How to use this sweeper pre-start checklist

  1. Prepare the sweeper: Park on a level surface, engage the parking brake and shut down the engine. Ensure the hopper is empty and the area around the sweeper is clear before beginning the inspection.
  2. Walk-around inspection: Circle the sweeper checking for visible damage, fluid leaks under the chassis, loose panels or fittings and debris caught in the main broom or side brooms that could affect operation.
  3. Engine compartment: Open the engine bay and check the oil level on the dipstick, coolant expansion tank level, air filter restriction indicator and belt condition. Look for leaks at hose connections and gaskets.
  4. Water system check: Confirm the water tank level is adequate for the planned shift. Test spray nozzles for even coverage and inspect all hoses and connections for leaks, kinks or damage that could reduce dust suppression.
  5. Broom and suction check: Start the sweeper engine and engage the brooms. Verify both the main broom and side brooms rotate in the correct direction. Check the suction fan for smooth operation and listen for abnormal noise.
  6. Cab and controls: Enter the cab and test all controls including broom raise, lower and speed adjustment, water spray activation, mirrors, seatbelt latch and retractor, horn, reversing alarm and all dashboard warning lights.
  7. Record and report: Complete the checklist marking Pass, Fail or N/A for every item. Note any defects with a description and action required. Sign and date the form and report critical faults to the supervisor before operating.

In MapTrack, you can run digital pre-starts attached to each asset. Each submission is stored as a timestamped PDF against the asset record.

How often should you complete this checklist?

A pre-start inspection must be completed before the first use of each shift every day the sweeper is operated. If multiple operators use the same sweeper across shifts each operator should complete their own check before taking control. End-of-shift inspections are also recommended to document the condition of brooms and water levels for the next operator.

Under the Australian WHS Act a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) must ensure powered mobile plant is maintained inspected and tested so it remains safe for use. Daily pre-start inspections are the minimum standard for sweepers operating on public roads or construction sites.
