What is a sweeper pre-start checklist?

A sweeper pre-start checklist is a structured daily inspection form used to verify that a road or site sweeper is safe to operate before each shift. MapTrack users digitise sweeper pre-start checklists to capture inspections on mobile and automatically log them against each asset. It covers all safety-critical components including the engine water spray system main broom and side brooms suction fan hopper hydraulic system cab controls lights and safety devices.

Pre-start inspections are required under Australian WHS legislation for all powered mobile plant. A documented pre-start ensures operators identify faults before they lead to breakdowns environmental spills or safety incidents on roads and construction sites.

Benefits

  • Safety: identify worn brooms water leaks or fan faults before they cause a breakdown or incident on a public road
  • Compliance: documented pre-start inspections satisfy WHS obligations for powered mobile plant
  • Reduced downtime: catching hydraulic leaks low water levels or blocked nozzles early prevents costly mid-shift stoppages
  • Accountability: signed checklists create a clear record of who inspected the sweeper and when
  • Consistency: every operator follows the same inspection process regardless of experience level
  • Audit readiness: a complete inspection history supports insurer council and regulator audits

How often should a sweeper be inspected?

A pre-start inspection must be completed before the first use of each shift every day the sweeper is operated. If multiple operators use the same sweeper across shifts each operator should complete their own check before taking control. End-of-shift inspections are also recommended to document the condition of brooms and water levels for the next operator.

Under the Australian WHS Act a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) must ensure powered mobile plant is maintained inspected and tested so it remains safe for use. Daily pre-start inspections are the minimum standard for sweepers operating on public roads or construction sites.
