What is a grout plant pre-start checklist?

A grout plant daily pre-start checklist is a structured form used to inspect a grout plant before it is operated each day or shift. Grout plants are used across piling, ground improvement, tunnel lining and post-tensioning operations where cement grout must be mixed and pumped under pressure. The checklist helps operators and supervisors confirm the grout plant is safe and fit for use, reducing the risk of mechanical failures, accidents and non-compliance. It covers everything from the engine and hydraulic system to the mixer, agitator, pump, delivery lines and safety devices, catching problems such as hydraulic leaks, worn paddles, faulty grate interlocks or blocked delivery lines before they lead to costly downtime or incidents.

Benefits of using a grout plant pre-start checklist

  • Catch mixer and pump faults early: spot worn paddles, blocked lines, leaking couplings and pump defects before they cause failures during grouting operations.
  • Operator safety: verify guards, grate interlocks, emergency stops and LOTO points are functional before the grout plant is started.
  • Compliance: meet WHS and regulatory requirements; demonstrate due diligence for plant operation on construction and civil sites.
  • Preventive maintenance: keep grout plants in good order and extend asset life by detecting wear, fluid issues and hydraulic faults early.
  • Consistency: a standardised approach so critical checks are not missed regardless of which operator is running the grout plant.
  • Recordkeeping: maintain a verifiable history of pre-starts for audits, insurance and investigations.

What to include in a grout plant pre-start checklist

Our free grout plant daily inspection form includes:

  • Grout plant details: asset ID, make/model, serial number, hours reading.
  • Operator details: name, licence/ticket number, date, site/location.
  • Walk-around: general condition and damage, visible leaks (oil, hydraulic, grout), ground conditions.
  • Engine and fluids: engine oil level, hydraulic oil level, fuel level, coolant (if water-cooled).
  • Hydraulic system: ON/OFF detent function, rams and cylinders no leaks, hoses secure, connections and couplings.
  • Electrical: battery mount and connections, isolator switch, ignition and start system.
  • Structure and guarding: panels, covers and grates, guards secure, no damage to frame.
  • Mixer and agitator: paddle or agitator condition, grate interlock (grate cannot open while paddle is turning), hopper condition, water supply connected.
  • Pump system: grout pump condition, delivery lines and couplings, pressure gauges.
  • Safety devices: fire extinguisher, emergency stops, LOTO points, guards in place.
  • Overall result, defects table, operator and supervisor sign-off.

How to conduct grout plant pre-start inspections

  1. Complete grout plant and operator details at the top of the checklist, including the hours reading.
  2. Perform a walk-around inspection before starting the engine. Check for leaks, damage and ground conditions.
  3. Go through each checklist item and inspect the corresponding component. Mark Pass or Fail (and add notes if needed).
  4. If any item fails, note it and do not operate the grout plant until it is rectified or approved. Report defects per your procedures.
  5. Sign and date when the check is complete. Keep the form for your records or export/save as PDF.

In MapTrack, you can turn this (or your own) checklist into a digital form completed on mobile. Results and photos attach to each grout plant, and failed items can trigger work orders so the grout plant is not available until it is cleared. Book a demo to see how.

How often to complete a grout plant pre-start

Complete a grout plant pre-start inspection before each use or at the start of each shift. If the grout plant has been relocated to a new position on site, has had repairs, or was used by another operator, perform a fresh check. Your company policy, site rules or contract may specify additional frequency. When in doubt, complete the checklist each time the grout plant is used.

Frequently asked questions

What should a grout plant pre-start inspection cover?
A grout plant pre-start inspection should cover a walk-around (general condition, visible leaks, ground conditions), engine and fluids (engine oil, hydraulic oil, fuel, coolant if water-cooled), hydraulic system (ON/OFF detent function, rams and cylinders, hoses, connections and couplings), electrical (battery mount and connections, isolator switch, ignition and start system), structure and guarding (panels, covers, grates, guards, frame condition), mixer and agitator (paddle or agitator condition, grate interlock, hopper condition, water supply), pump system (grout pump condition, delivery lines and couplings, pressure gauges), and safety devices (fire extinguisher, emergency stops, LOTO points, guards in place).
How often should grout plants be inspected?
Grout plants should receive a pre-start inspection before each use or at the start of each shift. If the grout plant has been relocated to a new position on site, has had repairs, or was used by another operator, perform a fresh check. Your company policy, site rules or contract may specify additional frequency. Always follow the most stringent requirement.
Who is responsible for the grout plant pre-start inspection?
The operator assigned to the grout plant is typically responsible for completing the pre-start inspection before each use. Supervisors should review completed checklists, verify defects are actioned and ensure operators are competent to perform the inspection. The person conducting the business or undertaking (PCBU) has overall responsibility for ensuring plant is safe and inspected in accordance with WHS regulations.
