What is a articulated dump truck 1000-hour service checklist?
A 1,000-hour service is the major tier of scheduled preventive maintenance for an articulated dump truck or ADT (Caterpillar 740/745, Volvo A30/A40/A45/A60, Komatsu HM300/HM400 and Bell B30/B40/B45/B50). It is performed every 1,000 engine hours, which in full-time mining, civil bulk-haul or quarry work is approximately every 4-6 months. The 1,000-hour service carries forward every task from the 250 and 500-hour services and adds the heaviest fluid changes the truck needs. That means a full hydraulic oil drain and replace (typically 250-400 litres on an ADT because of the dump body, retarder and steering circuits), hydraulic return and pressure filter replacement, transmission oil drain and replace on the Allison or ZF auto powershift, differential oil drain on the front, middle and rear axles (most ADTs are 6x6 with three driven axles), transfer case oil, hub oil drain on the planetary final drives at each wheel, articulation joint pivot pin and bearing inspection, oscillation joint check, suspension cylinder seal inspection, bed tilt cylinder seal check, retarder system fluid service, differential lock function test and dump-body pivot inspection. This service typically takes 8 to 10 hours and is best performed in a workshop because of the fluid volumes and the need for safe access to the underside of all three axles.
Under the WHS Regulations 2011 (Chapter 5, Division 5), persons with management or control of plant must ensure it is maintained so it remains safe and without risk to health. AS 4024.2601 sets safety requirements for earthmoving machinery and ISO 6165 defines the basic classification of articulated dump trucks. AS 2891 covers operator field of view for earthmoving machinery, which the service should validate. The Safe Work Australia Code of Practice for Managing Risks of Plant gives further guidance on documented maintenance programmes. A signed 1,000-hour major service record with fluid analysis, axle and articulation joint inspection data and brake test results gives strong evidence of compliance at audit, insurance assessment and resale. Organisations that capture these records in MapTrack get automatic hour-based scheduling, centralised history per asset and instant retrieval when proof of maintenance is needed.

Benefits of using this articulated dump truck 1000-hour service checklist
- Protects the three-axle drivetrain: ADTs have front, middle and rear differentials plus six planetary hubs, and 1,000-hour fluid changes catch wear before any one component fails on a loaded haul.
- Confirms articulation joint integrity: the centre pivot and oscillation bearing carry the entire load through every corner, and inspection at this interval catches pin elongation before it becomes a steering hazard.
- Catches suspension and retarder issues early: ADT haul cycles thrash hydro-pneumatic suspension and driveline retarders, so the 1,000-hour seal and fluid service prevents lost production days from on-haul failures.
- Extends drivetrain life by 20-30%: documented 1,000-hour services on transmission, transfer case and hub oils commonly carry an ADT to 25,000+ hours before rebuild, well above poorly maintained averages.
- Lifts resale and trade-in value: a complete service history with hour-stamped 1,000-hour major records typically adds 8-15% to auction price versus undocumented Volvo, CAT or Bell trucks.
- Satisfies WHS audit obligations: a signed major service record with technician trade certificate, fluid analysis and brake test results forms direct evidence of WHS Regulation 213 (maintenance of plant) compliance.
- Protects payload cycle times: servicing the retarder, hydro-pneumatic suspension and bed-tilt circuits at 1,000 hours keeps the truck hauling rated payload down-grade at full speed instead of being de-rated or parked mid-cycle on a bulk-haul job.

What to include in a articulated dump truck 1000-hour service checklist
This articulated dump truck 1000-hour service checklist covers 8 key areas:
- Engine system: change engine oil and filter, replace primary and secondary fuel filters, replace inner and outer air filters, inspect turbocharger and exhaust manifold, inspect alternator and starter motor, check DEF tank and filter on Tier 4 engines.
- Hydraulic system: drain and replace full hydraulic oil (250-400 litres ISO VG 46), replace hydraulic return filter and pressure filter, inspect main pump for noise and pressure, inspect dump-body lift cylinders, steering cylinders and seal weep.
- Drivetrain: drain and replace transmission oil (auto powershift Allison or ZF), drain transfer case oil, drain front, middle and rear differential oil (all three axles), drain hub oil at all six planetary final drives, inspect driveline universal joints and centre bearings.
- Cooling and exhaust: drain coolant where due (typically 2,000 hours), inspect radiator, charge air cooler and oil cooler cores, pressure-test cap and recovery bottle, inspect exhaust system clamps and DPF where fitted.
- Articulation, suspension and dump body: inspect articulation joint pivot pin and upper/lower bearings, inspect oscillation joint and grease points, inspect hydro-pneumatic suspension cylinder seals and nitrogen charge, inspect bed tilt cylinder seals, inspect dump body pivot pins and tail-gate where fitted.
- Brakes, retarder and electrical: service retarder system fluid (transmission-mounted or driveline-mounted), test differential lock function, test service brakes and park brake to OEM specification, inspect ABS sensors and harnesses, inspect electrical loom across articulation joint where chafe is highest risk.
- Lubrication and grease points: re-grease articulation joint upper and lower bearings, oscillation joint pivots, dump-body pivot pins, suspension cylinder rod ends and steering linkage per OEM grease chart.
- Operational test and sign-off: run ADT to operating temperature, cycle bed tilt up and down at rated load, test all powershift transmission gears in both directions, test retarder and service brakes on a controlled grade, verify differential lock function, record next service hours and complete technician sign-off.
How to use this articulated dump truck 1000-hour service checklist
- Pre-service preparation.: Park the ADT on level ground in the workshop, lower the dump body fully onto the chassis stops, apply the park brake, chock the wheels, isolate the battery and tag out the master switch. Lock the articulation joint with the OEM safety bar before any work near the centre pivot. Confirm hour meter reading and gather the OEM service manual and SDS sheets.
- Drain and sample fluids.: Drain engine oil, transmission, transfer case, all three differentials, all six hub planetary drives and the hydraulic tank while the machine is warm. Take labelled fluid samples from each system for laboratory analysis before refilling. Capture all drained fluid in bunded containers for licensed waste disposal.
- Replace filters and refill engine.: Replace engine oil filter, primary and secondary fuel filters, inner and outer air filters and the crankcase breather. Replace DEF filter on Tier 4 engines. Refill the engine with OEM-spec oil to the correct level, prime the fuel system and check for leaks before first crank.
- Hydraulic flush and refill.: Replace the hydraulic return filter, pressure filter and any case drain filters. Refill the hydraulic tank with fresh ISO VG 46 oil to spec (typically 250-400 litres on an ADT), then cycle the dump body, steering and retarder circuits with the engine at low idle to flush residual contamination before final top-up.
- Transmission and transfer case refill.: Refill transmission with OEM-spec Allison TES or ZF Ecofluid, refill transfer case with the correct grade, run the truck through forward, reverse and all gear ranges at low idle to circulate, then re-check levels hot. Confirm shift smoothness and check for any harshness or slip.
- Differential and hub planetary refills.: Refill the front, middle and rear differential housings with the OEM-spec gear oil (typically SAE 50 or 75W-90 synthetic). Refill all six wheel-end planetary hubs to the correct level after rotating each wheel to the fill port position. Test the differential lock function on each axle.
- Articulation and oscillation joint inspection.: Remove the articulation lock bar, position the truck to inspect the centre pivot under load. Measure pivot pin clearance, inspect upper and lower bearings for play, regrease all articulation and oscillation grease points, and inspect the steering cylinders for seal weep and rod plating damage.
- Suspension and dump body service.: Inspect the hydro-pneumatic suspension cylinder seals at each wheel, confirm nitrogen pre-charge against OEM spec, inspect the bed tilt cylinders for seal weep and rod damage. Inspect the dump body pivot pins, tail-gate latch and floor liner wear. Grease all pivot points.
- Brake, retarder and electrical service.: Drain and refill the retarder fluid where fitted, test service brakes and park brake to OEM hold-on-grade spec, inspect ABS wheel speed sensors and harnesses, inspect the electrical loom across the articulation joint and dump body pivot where chafe is highest. Test all lights, horns, reversing alarm and load weighing where fitted.
- Operator field of view and structural check.: Inspect mirrors, cameras and visibility aids per AS 2891 to confirm operator field of view has not been compromised. Inspect ROPS/FOPS cab mounts, structural welds on the chassis at the articulation joint, and the dump body pivot welds. Crack-test where due.
- Test, document and schedule.: Drive the truck through a low-load test to verify transmission shift, retarder function, brake performance and steering response. Sign off the service in MapTrack with technician name, trade certificate number, hour meter reading, parts used and next service due. Apply service tag and schedule the next 250, 500 and 1,000-hour services automatically.

The 1,000-hour major service should be performed every 1,000 engine hours, which for an ADT in full-time mining, quarry or civil bulk-haul work is approximately every 4 to 6 months. Severe duty (continuous loaded haul on steep grades, tropical conditions, heavy dust or twin-shift operations) shortens the interval to 800-900 hours, while light duty in cooler climates or part-time civil work can extend it slightly, though most OEMs (Volvo, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Bell) recommend never exceeding 1,000 hours without oil sampling justification. Schedule against the hour meter, not the calendar. Stack the 1,000-hour service with the carried-forward 250 and 500-hour items so all filter, fluid and inspection tasks land in one workshop visit. MapTrack can schedule the service automatically against hour meter readings and notify the workshop supervisor when each truck is within 50 hours of due.
