What is a fire extinguisher monthly inspection checklist?
A fire extinguisher monthly inspection checklist is a structured document used to verify that portable fire extinguishers throughout a building or site are accessible, charged, undamaged and ready for use. The monthly inspection is a visual check performed by trained building personnel (not a full service) that confirms each extinguisher is in its designated location, the pressure gauge reads within the operable range, the safety pin and tamper seal are intact, the hose and nozzle are clear, the body shows no corrosion or damage and the signage is visible.
AS 1851:2012 (Routine service of fire protection systems and equipment), Table 15.2 requires monthly routine service of portable fire extinguishers. This monthly check is distinct from the six-monthly service and the five-yearly hydrostatic test, which must be performed by a licensed fire protection technician. The WHS Regulations 2011, Regulation 42 requires that fire-fighting equipment provided at a workplace is maintained. Skipping monthly inspections means a discharged, damaged or missing extinguisher may go undetected for months, leaving an area without first-response fire protection and exposing the PCBU to penalties for failing to maintain fire safety equipment.

- Workplace safety: ensures every area of the building has accessible, operable first-response fire protection.
- Accountability: a signed monthly record demonstrates to fire authorities and insurers that the building owner is actively managing fire safety.
- Cost efficiency: monthly visual checks are quick and low cost, preventing expensive emergency replacements.
- Audit readiness: completed checklists provide documented evidence for the Annual Fire Safety Statement and insurance inspections.

What to include in a fire extinguisher monthly inspection checklist
This fire extinguisher monthly inspection checklist covers 11 key areas:
- Building details: building name, address, floor or zone inspected, number of extinguishers in zone.
- Inspector details: name, role, date, time taken.
- Extinguisher register: location ID, type (water, foam, CO2, dry chemical, wet chemical), size (kg or litres), serial number.
- Location check: extinguisher in designated position, not obstructed, mounting bracket secure, travel distance compliant.
- Signage: fire extinguisher sign visible, type and instruction label legible.
- Pressure gauge: needle in operable (green) range, gauge not cracked or fogged.
- Physical condition: body free of corrosion, dents and leaks, paint intact, base not corroded.
- Safety pin and tamper seal: pin present, tamper seal intact, handle and trigger undamaged.
- Hose and nozzle: hose connected, nozzle clear of obstructions, no cracks or deterioration.
- Defect register: extinguisher ID, defect description, action taken (removed from service, replaced, reported).
- Sign-off: inspector signature, date, next monthly inspection due.
How to use this fire extinguisher monthly inspection checklist
- Obtain the extinguisher location plan and begin the walk-through: Use the building fire extinguisher location plan or asset register to confirm how many extinguishers are in the zone. Walk the floor in a systematic path so every extinguisher is checked and none are missed.
- Check each extinguisher location, accessibility and signage: Confirm the extinguisher is in its designated location and the mounting bracket is secure. Verify nothing is blocking access (furniture, stock, equipment). Check the fire extinguisher sign is visible from the approach direction and the type and instruction label on the body is legible.
- Inspect the pressure gauge, safety pin, tamper seal and physical condition: Confirm the pressure gauge needle is in the green (operable) range. Check the safety pin is present and the tamper seal is intact, indicating the extinguisher has not been discharged or tampered with. Inspect the body for corrosion, dents, leaks or paint damage.
- Check the hose, nozzle and operating handle: Verify the hose is connected and free of cracks. Confirm the nozzle is clear of blockages. Check the operating handle and trigger mechanism for damage. For CO2 extinguishers, check the discharge horn for cracks.
- Record defects and sign off the inspection: Log any defects on the checklist with the extinguisher ID and a description of the issue. Remove any discharged or damaged extinguisher from service and arrange a replacement. Sign and date the checklist and note the next monthly inspection due date.
In MapTrack, you can manage fire safety inspections and equipment checks digitally. Each submission is stored as a timestamped PDF against the asset record.

Six-monthly servicing (by a licensed fire protection technician) includes additional checks such as weight verification for CO2 extinguishers and detailed component inspection. Five-yearly hydrostatic pressure testing confirms the structural integrity of the cylinder. Annual inspections are also part of the service schedule. The building owner must maintain records of all inspections and services for the Annual Fire Safety Statement.
